Immigrant fraudsters? What about our own homegrown ones...

Brooklyn D.A.: Man impersonates dead mother to collect $115,000 in Social Security, rent subsidies

He may be the ultimate mama's boy.

A Brooklyn man is accused of donning a wig, nail polish and dresses to impersonate his dead mom and collect $115,000 in Social Security and rent subsidies.

For six years, Thomas Prusik-Parkin hoodwinked a stunning array of government agencies with his elaborate charade - using a cane, heavy makeup, fake ID and a phony "nephew," law enforcement sources said.

City to workers: Wear underwear, deodorant

New dress code instructs employees to observe 'strict personal hygiene'

updated 9:14 a.m. ET, Thurs., June 18, 2009
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - A Florida city is cleaning up with a new dress code that requires city workers to wear underwear and use deodorant.

The city council in Brooksville north of Tampa recently approved a dress code that instructs employees to observe "strict personal hygiene."

It also prohibits exposed underwear, clothing with foul language, "sexually provocative" clothes and piercings anywhere except the ears.

Repeat offenders can be fired.

The city council approved the dress code 4-1 as part of a wider effort to update existing policies and ordinances.

The one vote in opposition came from Mayor Joe Bernadini. He said the underwear edict "takes away freedom of choice."

Words fail me Eek Hopefully she'll appeal and they'll reduce the outrageous fine. How can they try to make one person accountable for ALL of the RIAA members loss?? Crazy!

Does the Fine Fit the Crime?

In a do-over of the only music downloading case to make it to trial, Minnesota mother of four Jammie Thomas-Rasset has been found guilty of illegally sharing 24 songs over the internet. A federal jury decided she must pay the recording industry $80,000 per song, for a total of $1.9 million. Thomas-Rasset calls the fine “kind of ridiculous” and her attorney notes that songs can be downloaded for less than a dollar each.

CNN story

And is it constitutional?

Don't let the door hit ya in the a-ss on the way out! I'm glad I don't live in TX (sorry Hudson):

House takes up Kent impeachment

Shortly after noon CDT today, the House of Representatives began considering the impeachment of imprisoned U.S. District Judge Samuel B. Kent on charges that he abused his power and lied to cover up repeated sexual assaults on two female court employees.

The House is weighing four articles of impeachment against the 59-year-old jurist. The charges are part of the accusations that Kent committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” in his $174,000-a-year post.

By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer Don Thompson, Associated Press Writer – 55 mins ago

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With California slipping into a financial sinkhole, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to save more than $180 million by cutting short the sentences of thousands of immigrants in the state's prisons and turning them over to federal authorities for deportation.

The idea faces certain hurdles — for one thing, commuting some sentences will require court approval — and immigration authorities warn that a mass release of inmates from California and other states could swamp the federal system, which is already at capacity.

But Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Lisa Page said: "Every dollar not spent to house an undocumented immigrant inmate is a dollar that can be spent on health care services and education and other important programs to Californians. These inmates are the federal government's responsibility and California taxpayers shouldn't be paying the bill."

In recent years, other states have struck agreements with federal authorities to deport some inmates before their sentences were up, but those releases were done on a much smaller scale than what California is proposing.

The state's plan would involve as many as 19,000 inmates. Those among them who committed *** offenses or violent crimes would not be eligible for early release, Page said Friday.

Nearly 65,000 immigrants — most of them in the U.S. illegally — are serving time in the U.S. for state crimes.

Once immigrants have done their time in state prison, the federal government takes custody of most of them and begins deportation proceedings against them, either because they are illegal immigrants or because they committed crimes while in the U.S. legally.

The government reimburses states for some of the expenses involved in imprisoning immigrants, but states say the money is not nearly enough to cover their costs.

Schwarzenegger is proposing to commute the sentences of thousands of immigrants and transfer them to federal custody over the next 12 months to help close a state budget gap projected at more than $24 billion.

The savings would be a pittance for California — just $182 million if all 19,000 inmates now being held for immigration authorities were released — but Schwarzenegger is looking to save every dime he can. He already has proposed eliminating health care for poor children.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said the 33,000 federal detention cells across the country already are full, and immigration judges could be overloaded if the number of deportation cases balloons.

California Corrections spokesman Seth Unger said that to avoid overwhelming the federal system, the state would keep its inmates behind bars until their deportation hearings were over and their appeals exhausted. In that way, they could be deported almost immediately after being turned over to federal authorities.

Since more than 70 percent of California's immigrant inmates are from Mexico, deporting them would typically involve putting them on a bus.

Officials in other states, including Oregon and Washington, are considering similar moves.

"The fiscal realities that Florida and California and other states are facing will probably put great pressure on trying to reduce the prison population," said Michael Ramage, general counsel for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. "Why should the state be saddled with the expense of having to provide a place for these people to be incarcerated while they wait to be deported?"

Most of these released inmates are unlikely to serve additional time once they are home. That is one reason governors of some states are not about to follow Schwarzenegger's example.

"That's just not happening here in Texas," said Katherine Cesinger, a spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

Officials with the Mexican consulate in Sacramento expressed concern that thousands of ex-convicts could be deported to Mexico.

"In the event that this happens, we will make sure that it takes place in an orderly and safe manner, and that the rights of all deportees, regardless of their migratory status, are observed and respected unconditionally," Consul General Carlos Gonza*** Gutierrez said.

Schwarzenegger can single-handedly commute the sentences of 3,200 of them who were convicted of nonviolent, non-sexual offenses. Releasing more serious and repeat offenders early requires approval from the state Supreme Court.

For weeks, the Schwarzenegger administration left open the possibility that violent and *** offenders could be released too. But on Friday, in response to inquiries from The Associated Press, Schwarzenegger's spokeswoman said the governor has ruled that out.

Schwarzenegger's proposal was prompted in part by President Barack Obama's May budget proposal to end the $400 million program that pays states and counties for holding illegal immigrants behind bars — a program that California officials say reimburses only about 12 percent of the state's costs.

U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman Melissa Schwartz said the Obama administration wants to divert the money to border security and immigration enforcement.

Too many inmates in state and federal prisons? We need a clean cut approach. Lets put our heads together on this one.

Lol, I could settle for lethal injection. I guess the guillotine had it's day, but probably considered cruel and unusual at this point. Depending on the nature of the crime, probably still fitting for some, though. Wink

The D.C. government released emergency regulations yesterday that greatly expand the models of handguns that District residents can own, a shift designed to stave off another lawsuit over its compliance with the Second Amendment.

D.C. Expands List Of Allowed Guns To Avert Lawsuit
*
Special Report: D.C. Handgun Ban

The new regulations, which come as the District continues to grapple with last year's Supreme Court decision that threw out the city's gun ban, will allow residents to legally obtain at least 1,000 additional types and models of handguns.

City leaders sought to play down the effects of the new regulations, but gun rights advocates said they were another boost to their efforts to undo the District's long-held restrictions on personal possession of weapons.

"We are gratified the District is recognizing their approach is unworkable and unconstitutional," said Alan Gura, who was the lead attorney in the District of Columbia v. Heller Supreme Court case. "There is now a whole new universe of guns that will now be available."

In addition to permitting guns in the District that are legal in California, the city will also allow residents to apply to register handguns that are permissible in Massachusetts and Maryland.

The new rules will give gun owners a broader array of choices when they go shopping for handguns to keep in their home. In some cases, the change could mean something as minor as what color of weapon they can purchase. In other instances, gun owners will have access to weapons with additional design features.

"These new rules are part of our continuing effort to develop reasonable laws and regulations governing gun ownership in the District," Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) said in a statement.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier, whose department developed the policies, said the regulations ensure the city has "a firearms registration process that fully complies with the Supreme Court decision allowing District residents to keep a firearm in their home."

The 5 to 4 Heller ruling, issued in January 2008, overturned the District's three-decades-old handgun ban. The justices determined the Second Amendment grants individuals the right to possess guns for self-defense but said governments may impose reasonable restrictions.

After that ruling, the D.C. Council approved regulations that permit residents to register certain handguns once applicants pass a written examination and provide proof of residency and good vision. People are not allowed to carry guns outside their homes. District officials compiled a list of permissible handguns based on the types of weapons certified for sale in California.

Gun rights advocates protested, saying the list was too restrictive. Gura filed another lawsuit in federal court in March on behalf of three individuals who wanted a handgun that wasn't on the District's list.

To avoid that litigation, Attorney General Peter Nickles said the city decided to expand its list of legal weapons to include those listed on Maryland's and Massachusetts's "safe gun rosters."

A responsible Republican? Where is Mark Sanford?

AWOL South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has entire state in a tizzy

Where in the world is South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford?

The governor went missing four days ago and his state is in a tizzy.

Sanford ditched his security detail on Thursday, missed Father's Day weekend with his family, and didn't show up at work Monday.

Neither his wife, nor the state's lieutenant governor, nor police officials know where he is, South Carolina newspapers reported.

My guess is he won't be re-elected next time around!
