Nothing to do with the fact that Iraq has the second biggest oil field in the world of course Wink

Roll on Jan 20th and the world will be better place without Cheney and Bush.

The results of water boarding are unknown? lets see. Any successful attacks here within our borders? Nope. I guess it worked.

You've just confirmed what I said. Selfish interest a la Bush and Co. The rest of the world stops at the US Border Wink (unless you want to invade another country).

The rest of the world does stop at our border as it does at every other country's border. Is it selfish to avoid being bombed? I don't get it.

Pre-911 it was an entirely different U.S. As we all know. A big part of worldly opinion being sub par has a lot to do with the media's opposing responsibilities concerning ratings and truth. We'll never be privy to all. Or for that matter should we expect to with the inherent risk to security/economic status.

To say water boarding wasn't necessary is an indefensible argument into what if scenarios. We weren't bombed so it shouldn't have been done. Or because of it we didn't suffer more 747 missiles? No one can say for sure and to speak beyond what we see is speculative.

An unintended tragedy of war is that there will be innocent suffering. In any conflict of civilized societies one desire is to mitigate that which isn't necessary in meeting the goal. An important military objective is winning the hearts and minds of the opposing sides non-military. This alone should make the point clear we strive to mitigate casualties of non-combatants. Of course the easy targets not hit are never reported. The one mistake will get headline news. Followed by the high priced commercial ad, of course. Its the nature of the media beast.

I agree many areas are not safe to travel to anymore. Mexico being one them. You're more likely to be kidnapped by ransom seeking thugs (police and otherwise) in Tijuana than you are getting shot in Bosnia, Go figure.

Hmm.. does it also mean that all the presidents before Bush prevented terrorist attacks, whether they used waterboarding or not? I guess they worked just as hard as Bush did...

This is a good commentary on what life in Iraq after the US leaves might be like. It's not as black and white as some want to believe:

Shoe-attack reaction reflects tricky U.S. endgame in Iraq

Comedians are having a field day with the shoe assault on President Bush by an angry Arab journalist at a Baghdad news conference on Sunday. Humorist Andy Borowitz, for example, suggests that the New York Yankees want to sign the attacker as a pitcher. Bush laughed off the flying footwear: "It was a size 10." The unscathed president also joked about seeing the man's "sole."

Cheney would have gone to war in Iraq even if they didn't have WMDs. I smell a war crimes court tribunal coming.

Cheney: Iraq had 'every intention' of resuming WMD program

Vice President D-ick Cheney on Monday defended the Bush administration’s decision to invade Iraq in March 2003, claiming that then-President Saddam Hussein had “every intention” of resuming production of weapons of mass destruction once United Nations sanctions were lifted.

Former White House Adviser Karl Rove said last week that if pre-war intelligence on the Iraqi WMD programs had been accurate, the United States likely would not have entered the war. But asked about Rove’s comment during an interview with ABC News Monday, Cheney said “I disagree with that.”

Although it has the second largest oil reserve, it still produces 6% of the worlds oil. OPEC quotas tend to be enforced through a variety of measures.

As for closing Guantanamo, it is more complicated than transferring suspected terrorists. Leavenworth military prison might be inappropriate and Marion Ill Federal Prison, the only level 6 federal prison in the US Department of Justice, would prove a logistics nightmare to keep 300 some odd suspected terrorists in isolation. And no, you do not want these guys in the general population either. No country wants these guys, except maybe China. But if we send them there, U.S. would incur the wrath of the human rights advocates.

Thanks God there are still honest people in this profession

Pilot tells passengers "I am not qualified to land the plane"

by Josh Lew Dec 17th 2008 @ 1:30PM

A Flybe Airlines flight from Cardiff to Paris had to turn around because of fog at Charles De Gaulle Airport. The fog did not force the airport to close. Rather, the pilot, a man with 30 years of experience, had never completed low-visibility training for the particular aircraft that he was flying.

Passengers on the flight were stunned when, 20 minutes shy of De Gaulle, the pilot got on the PA system and, instead of announcing the imminent arrival, said the following:

'Unfortunately I'm not qualified to land the plane in Paris. They are asking for a level two qualification and I only have a level five. We'll have to fly back.'

And fly back they did. The bizarre incident is nothing if not humorous, but I doubt the passengers on the flight were amused.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said that such a situation was rare, but not unheard of. "There are different classifications of aircraft and when an aircraft is updated, pilot's who have flown an older version have to completely retrain."

"Pilot tells passengers "I am not qualified to land the plane"

In Europe, the rules for IFR currency are more complicated than here. Basically you have to be qualified to be IFR current in that particular airplane. Here in the US, it's a generic currency. Every PIC (Pilot In Command) has to do an Instrument Proficiency Check every 6 months (every 12 months for an SIC) but it's not specific to the airplane, but to the person. Any difference in make and model is covered by differences training when you do your initial training in that airplane.

Frankly, the JAA (Joint Aviation Authority) rules in Europe are overly complex and it doesn't really make much difference weather the airplane is a Mk1 or 2 model. It still flies the same. All the flight instrumentation layout is pretty much standard these days.

UK troops to leave Iraq 'by July'

British troops are to leave Iraq by the end of July next year, Gordon Brown has said after talks with Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki in Baghdad.

Military operations will end by 31 May and the remaining 4,100 service personnel will leave within two months.

Several hundred trainers will remain, some working with the Iraqi navy.

UK PM Mr Brown, who held talks with Mr Maliki before heading to Basra, said he was proud of British troops adding: "We leave Iraq a better place".

The withdrawal announcement came after at least 18 people were killed and dozens wounded in a twin bomb attack in Baghdad on Wednesday.

Mr Brown said he would give further details on UK troops in Iraq in a statement to the House of Commons on Thursday.

'New era'

BBC diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams said the announcement ended months of speculation.

Timeline: UK troops in Basra

Mr Brown told the BBC: "I feel that the task that we set out to do is being done and that's why we can take a decision to bring most of our forces home."

At a joint press conference, Mr Maliki confirmed that the agreement included a provision for the Iraqi government to request an extension of the British military presence.

However, both leaders indicated it was not expected to be used.

Mr Brown said people had been given an "economic stake in the future of Iraq" and said: "I am proud of the contribution British forces have made. They are the pride of Britain and the best in the world."

In their joint statement, the leaders said the role played by the UK combat forces was "drawing to a close" but the partnership between Britain and Iraq would "continue to take on new dimensions" and be strengthened.

Afghanistan

The withdrawal of UK troops is expected to start in the spring although Mr Brown suggested the biggest withdrawals would take place in the summer.

Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup played down suggestions troops would be transferred to Afghanistan.

He said: "We cannot just have a one-to-one transfer from Iraq to Afghanistan. "The net result must be a reduction in our operational tempo because the forces have been overstretched for too long."

But he added they would have to look at the "requirement on the ground".

In Basra Mr Brown visited British troops and laid a wreath in memory of the 178 British servicemen and women who have been killed in Iraq since the 2003 invasion.

Responding to the announcement, shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said it showed "renewed confidence" in the Iraqi government's ability to maintain security.

But he questioned the timing of the announcement saying the government's policy had previously been to say troops would leave "when circumstances allowed on the ground".

"I don't know why the government would have changed their mind and given such a specific commitment to dates.

"I'm sure that it's complete coincidence that it's done on the same day that we've got horrendous unemployment figures."

The Conservatives have reiterated their calls for a public inquiry into the causes and conduct of the Iraq war.

At prime minister's questions, shadow foreign secretary William Hague said: "The learning of lessons that may be relevant to Afghanistan and elsewhere can no longer be delayed."

Harriet Harman, standing in for Mr Brown at PMQs, replied that the government had made clear there would be no full inquiry while troops were still in Iraq.

"We have to respect the fact that our fighting forces are still in Iraq. There is no delay," she said.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said it was a "huge relief" that the end was "at last in sight".

"There must be a fully independent public inquiry into how this was allowed to happen. The time when Brown has been able to hide behind our troops' ongoing presence in the country is coming to an end," he said.

"The death and injury of hundreds of British troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians in this futile war cannot simply be swept under the carpet."

The SNP and Plaid Cymru also called for ministers to set out a timetable for a public inquiry into the war.

Over 2T tons of ice melted in arctic since '03
Tue Dec 16, 7:10 am ET

WASHINGTON – More than 2 trillion tons of land ice in Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska have melted since 2003, according to new NASA satellite data that show the latest signs of what scientists say is global warming.

Source
More than half of the loss of landlocked ice in the past five years has occurred in Greenland, based on measurements of ice weight by NASA's GRACE satellite, said NASA geophysicist Scott Luthcke. The water melting from Greenland in the past five years would fill up about 11 Chesapeake Bays, he said, and the Greenland melt seems to be accelerating.

NASA scientists planned to present their findings Thursday at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco. Luthcke said Greenland figures for the summer of 2008 aren't complete yet, but this year's ice loss, while still significant, won't be as severe as 2007.

The news was better for Alaska. After a precipitous drop in 2005, land ice increased slightly in 2008 because of large winter snowfalls, Luthcke said. Since 2003, when the NASA satellite started taking measurements, Alaska has lost 400 billion tons of land ice.

In assessing climate change, scientists generally look at several years to determine the overall trend.

Melting of land ice, unlike sea ice, increases sea levels very slightly. In the 1990s, Greenland didn't add to world sea level rise; now that island is adding about half a millimeter of sea level rise a year, NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally said in a telephone interview from the conference.

Between Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska, melting land ice has raised global sea levels about one-fifth of an inch in the past five years, Luthcke said. Sea levels also rise from water expanding as it warms.

Other research, being presented this week at the geophysical meeting point to more melting concerns from global warming, especially with sea ice.

"It's not getting better; it's continuing to show strong signs of warming and amplification," Zwally said. "There's no reversal taking place."

Scientists studying sea ice will announce that parts of the Arctic north of Alaska were 9 to 10 degrees warmer this past fall, a strong early indication of what researchers call the Arctic amplification effect. That's when the Arctic warms faster than predicted, and warming there is accelerating faster than elsewhere on the globe.

As sea ice melts, the Arctic waters absorb more heat in the summer, having lost the reflective powers of vast packs of white ice. That absorbed heat is released into the air in the fall. That has led to autumn temperatures in the last several years that are six to 10 degrees warmer than they were in the 1980s, said research scientist Julienne Stroeve at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.

That's a strong and early impact of global warming, she said.

"The pace of change is starting to outstrip our ability to keep up with it, in terms of our understanding of it," said Mark Serreze, senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., a co-author of the Arctic amplification study.

Two other studies coming out at the conference assess how Arctic thawing is releasing methane — the second most potent greenhouse gas. One study shows that the loss of sea ice warms the water, which warms the permafrost on nearby land in Alaska, thus producing methane, Stroeve says.

A second study suggests even larger amounts of frozen methane are trapped in lakebeds and sea bottoms around Siberia and they are starting to bubble to the surface in some spots in alarming amounts, said Igor Semiletov, a professor at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. In late summer, Semiletov found methane bubbling up from parts of the East Siberian Sea and Laptev Sea at levels that were 10 times higher than they were in the mid-1990s, he said based on a study this summer.

The amounts of methane in the region could dramatically increase global warming if they get released, he said.

That, Semiletov said, "should alarm people."
