Hi folks,

I have my N-400 interview around mid April. What tax filing documents do I need to bring and how far back they may check? I have all the photocopies of taxs documents that I filed with IRS in the past. However, I am not sure if these copies will be good. Or, do I have to request a proof of tax filing document with the IRS? Your insight on this matter will be appreciated.

according to my attorney (as of a year ago) it was sufficient to bring copies to the interview, I was told 5 years should be good. However, I went to a local IRS office (after peak tax time Smile, in your case mid april is falling righ into that time frame) and asked, VERY NICELEY, to print me summaries for the past 5 years. Lady pulled it up and printed it for me (that is what I brought to the interview with me), each summary was 5 pages long in IRS format. At the interview, officer only wanted to see my latest copy, which was 2003 for me. but I did hand the whole pack to him anyways and he laughed and said that I was sure 'prepared' well. Obtaining official IRS copies is Pricey that is why I went with route of summaries. I was told that in big cities people got turned down with the summaries request...I guess you can either try or bring your copies (in some cases, OFFICIAL IRS copies will/might be requested, in that event you will have to hit IRS http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq1-6.html and fork out $39 per year requested )

Tax transcripts are available free of charge. For my marriage-based naturalization, I had to submit the past 3 years.

Just call 1-800-829-1040 and it is all automated. You just key in the year of transcripts and it sends it to your last known address. You can also fill in the form 4506T if you want the transcripts send to another address different than what you used the last time you filed your taxes.
