Here we have a religiously driven element that can not be negotiated with. There it would have been a divided patriotism. In either case there was the unknown element of loyalty. Hence the reason that unit was kept in the European theater. The proper decision I believe. There is no proper front concerning faith. So, no known battle lines.

Correction, I was referring to Guantanamo Bay than airport check ins. And most of the world prior to 9/11 operated on a higher security level than US airport security.

The initial comment was a general note about the trade off in security. Perhaps the rest of the world is more threat aware. Does it validate what we do? Or does it lend to the argument that our society is becoming similar to what we claim to disassociate from? I think it is the rest of the world attempting to create a like environment here. Remove what makes this country great.

Do you think the interrogation is justified? Would you soften it or get information at any cost?

One huge mistake made was giving terrorists access to criminal courts. Doing so legitimatized their activity by giving them the capability to question our actions in defending ourselves. You can't negotiate with them. You can't expect truth. And you surely should not give them another weapon to use. The high evidence bar required for conviction is better than an AK-47. What of the problems with revealing elements of national security during the trial? If all evidence can't be exposed to show the terrorist connection it will likely result in acquittals.

McCain, Obama Spar Over Immigration

By John Whitesides and Jeff Mason,Reuters
Posted: 2008-06-28 18:30:21

WASHINGTON (June 28) -

Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain courted Hispanic support on Saturday, and Obama accused his White House rival of backing away from comprehensive U.S. immigration reform under pressure from his party.

In separate appearances before a group of Latino public officials, the two presidential contenders portrayed themselves as dedicated champions for Hispanics -- a fast-growing and critical swing voting bloc in November's election.

Obama took aim at McCain's approach to comprehensive immigration reform and his change of emphasis on legislation to offer a pathway to citizenship for the country's 12 million illegal immigrants.

2icon_bounceMcCain, an Arizona senator, broke with his party and worked for the plan, which ultimately failed in Congress amid heavy Republican opposition.

But he shifted his approach during the fight for the party's nomination to emphasize the need to secure U.S. borders before addressing the status of illegal immigrants.

"One place where Senator McCain used to offer change was on immigration. He was a champion of comprehensive reform, and I admired him for it," Obama, an Illinois senator who supported the proposal, told the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

2icon_compress"But when he was running for his party's nomination, he walked away from that commitment. He said he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote," he said. "If we are going to solve the challenges we face, we can't vacillate, we can't shift depending on our politics."

McCain, who appeared before the group ahead of Obama, admitted the plan "wasn't very popular with some in my party" but said he would still work for a broad-based overhaul of U.S. immigration laws.

2bricks"It'll be my top priority yesterday, today and tomorrow," McCain said when asked if immigration reform would be high on his to-do list in his first 100 days in office.

A McCain spokesman accused Obama of voting for "poison pill" amendments that doomed the immigration deal.

helpsmilie"It was Obama himself who worked to kill the Senate's bipartisan immigration reform compromise last year," Brian Rogers said in a statement.

The Obama campaign shot back that McCain had thanked Obama for his support on the issue in 2006.

McCain told the Latino officials the proposal failed because Americans were not confident Congress would protect U.S. borders before dealing with the question of illegal immigration.

"GOD'S CHILDREN"

"I want to assure you we will address this issue in a humane and compassionate fashion," he said, calling illegal immigrants "God's children."

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States and account for about 9 percent of the national electorate. They could be a critical swing voting bloc in November battleground states like Florida and in the U.S. Southwest.

In 2004, President George W. Bush won about 40 percent of the Hispanic vote -- a Republican record -- in defeating Democrat John Kerry. But opinion polls show Republicans have been hurt with Hispanics by the debate over immigration reform.

Obama has had his own problem with Hispanics, who heavily supported his primary rival Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.

Polls show Obama has rebounded among Hispanics since clinching the Democratic nomination. Many polls show McCain falling short of Bush's 40 percent of Hispanic support.

Obama, who will be the first black nominee of a major U.S. political party, stressed the groundbreaking nature of his candidacy to the Hispanic group.

"I'm hoping that somewhere out in this audience sits the person who will become the first Latino nominee of a major party," he said.

McCain was interrupted four times during his speech and subsequent questions by protesters who challenged his staunch backing of the Iraq war. Officials of the Hispanic group apologized and said they were not members.

Obama, who has called for a withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months of taking office, said Hispanics had borne a heavy burden during the war.

Both candidates stressed economic and education proposals they said would help Hispanics. McCain touted his plans to cut corporate tax rates and make Bush's income tax cuts permanent, along with his support for free trade proposals.

"It is a terrible mistake to raise taxes during an economic downturn," McCain said. "I reject the false virtues of economic isolationism. Any confident, competent government should embrace competition -- it makes us stronger."

Both McCain and Obama will speak next month to another influential Hispanic group, the National Council of La Raza, at its convention in San Diego.

I'm ignoring most of the blather from the candidates at this time. They are pandering for votes and saying what people want to here. As is often the case the required action will upset a group of people when it occurs, after election.

I am hoping that McCain will do what is needed to turn things around when he is elected. He probably will. Being from AZ he knows first hand the affects it has had on his state.

I think he knows the demands from the la raza coalition are nothing but un-American race based interests.

Mccain will grant amnesty if he can get it thru. And yes I believe that he will make it a priority because that is the only issue that he is probably qualified to try to absorb in his pea brain. After all, his own wife broke the rules and brought their adopted child into this country without proper documentation. (money and power talks)

Let us hope that the congress will have enough sense to block the reward for the undocumented breaking into this country and thumbing their noses at those that followed the rules by waiting in line. If that old fool or that young fool grants amnesty, it will only take a few years for the country to take an even bigger downward spiral.

Davdah,

I can think of at least 10 things that these 2 clowns should do for americans/lpr before giving away the farm to illegals.

How about this.

forgive every student loan that has gone to default. STUDENT LOAN amnesty

How about a new lease on life for the legal homeless NEW SYART AMNESTY

How about a one time forgiveness for bankruptcy/foreclosure for a new start CREDIT AMNESTY

How about 2yrs free/assisted education for legal citizens that qualify academically

INVEST in AMERICA AMNESTY

REWARD a VETERAN first instead of the way they are treated now.

How about a SAVE A HOME program or special mortgage program.

HELP US HELP US. Whatever happend to help me help you (american) Not lets help an illegal. Roll Eyes

All in favor for AMNESTY for Americans say AYE!

Who's in?

4now, a lot of Americans are hoping for this.
It's very sad when people lives from paychecks to paychecks and not enough.

A lot right now are even behind the property tax payments.

The only reason for this is being stupid. How many people do you know that are living within their means? Very, very few. Most are buying things they can't afford, saving nothing, and hoping to win the lottery to pay it all off. What is living within one's means.? Carry a zero balance on their credit cards each month. The only debt is a mortgage and perhaps a car payment. Who can say they are in this category? Maybe 1 out of a 100.

The vast majority of people knew they could not afford the home they were purchasing. They went along and played the game of deceit to get approved. Now what? They are crying because the financial straw house blew down? They want the rest of the country to bail them out. Sorry, I am not willing to post that bond.

4now, I hope you are wrong about McCain's plans. I genuinely hope he has an epiphany and sees the reality of what is happening and makes the changes needed.

This is what my hubby tells me too Davdah, some people are just so irresponsible and they continually get themselves in debt. (We were discussing about credit scores then.)

But 4Now's suggestions are still meritorious. We got a friend who got foreclosed - his wife cheated on him, he was over his head paying alimony, you know, the usual nastiness that happens when couples separate. It should be on a case-to-case basis. He was a trusting husband who got the short end of the stick. I think people like him should be given another chance.

That's an AYE for me. Smile

Not just debt. Savings too. I succumbed to the norm of living the life of Riley many years ago. I learned the lesson the hard way when I lost the job I had. From that point forward I adhered to one principle in purchasing. Can I pay this off when the credit card bill comes in? If no, then don't buy it.

In order to give any of these people a second chance someone else is going to get stuck with the bill. Is it fair to impose a third party debt on the tax payers at large? That is where this is stuck at. In order to fix this everyone will get a piece of the bill. That will only serve to lower everyone's buying power and possibly compound the problem. More debt is not a solution.

Sure some I agree they live beyond their means.
But what about those who don't, say 10 years ago
they can afford the mortgage, now the economic went to ****, where companies are cutting off
employee's hours, and closing down. When they need to spend $500 worth of gas a month to get to theirjob, and add $250 dollars more on the heat and electric bills not to mention the price of other commodities.

People who got laid off are force to take a minimum wage job just to survive some of the bills.

A lot of American people can't even afford
healthcare for their children.

If illegal immigrants get a free health care
and free school and free gov. service,

Whats wrong if American people ask for a special
mortgage program?
