If a person is accused in writing of something egregious and it turns out to be false, the falsely accused has the option to sue for libel. The individual would have to show the accusations are false and as a result suffered monetary damages, hurt feelings don't count. Damages are not necessarily limited to lost work or expense in defense of one's character. They could be other things such as medical treatment which can be shown to be a consequence of the accusations made.
If the allegations result in an arrest which subsequently lead to a not guilty verdict, the wronged party may sue the private citizen for malicious prosecution. Other remedies exist for false imprisonment and civil rights violations provided law enforcement were complicit accessories to this act.
