I presume you were brought here as a small child. Is your present wife an American citizen? She may be able to sponsor you to become a citizen, but it will take a few years. Give us as many details as you can, whatever information you are comfortable with giving out and some of us may be able to help you. Please don't be dicouraged by some of the negative comments you may get here.

I had a German co-worker, who too, was brought to the States 30+ yrs. ago by her parents. Even though she never formally naturalized, the laws were different then and she attended school, worked, even joining the Air Force and receiving an U.S. passport during the service (!!!) with which she serviced and traveled abroud. A few years later (after the passport had expired), and while she was attempting to renew her U.S. passport, she could not prove legal residency or U.S. citizenship.

She was in trouble in big trouble but not detained (this is happening in 1997, after the IRAIRA laws, where claiming false U.S. citizenship is a removable felony offense). She was told to go through the formal process of what all eligable aliens do to become a naturalized citizen of this great nation! Unfortunatly, I don't know where she is now or what she's doing.

A general amnesty for cases like her is now in statute(where innocent and provable non-knowledge about non-citizen status exist). If you're out-of-status now, you need to have a basis to adjust your status (that's for instance if your parents or guardians brought you into the country illegally).

If you're a permanent resident alien (brought here legally, and processesed properly), update your papers and registrations and apply for naturalization. Good luck!

If your spouse is a U.S. Citizen, she can sponsor your petition for permanent residence. In the interim, you will be eligible for employment authorization, but I would not leave the U.S. as you may be subject to a 10 year bar to reentry. After three years of permanent residency, you can apply for citizenship.
