Hello,

I am originally from Kazakhstan. I am getting married in a few months, and dont know what to do about my passport -- once I get married, I will change my name. What should I do about my name in my Kazakh passport?

Hello,
When you say "name", do you mean last name only(logically-through marriage, the last name would be different, unless you are a man), or what you are trying to say is that you would like to change your first name, also?
If you would like to change your first name, then you can only do that at your citizenship interview.
If you would like to change your last name(on the passport and ids), then that would be different.
Maybe you can specify exactly what you mean by "name", or maybe someone else would understand what you meant by "name" without you giving any specifications.
Good Luck and Happy Holidays. :0)

Hi immigrant,

You will have Marriage Certificate to prove that you have changed your last name.

After marrying my American citizen husband, I obtained EAD on married name, and Green Card has my married name. But I did not change name in my Belarus passport. In Belarus, you don't want to show to customs or any officials that you are USA resident, so for travel safety and less questioning I was recommended to keep passport with maiden last name. I don't know if this is an issue in Kazakhstan. After 8 years here, I've finally gone to Belarus to see my family this September. Leaving United States, I've presented to customs only my passport along with a ticket. Leaving Belarus and on arrival to USA, I had to demonstrate the Green Card (married name) along with passport (maiden name), nobody ever asked for Marriage Certificate. So don't worry. Good luck with your marriage!
