The first element of the depression was WWI. It fouled up world wide production. We became the single source supplier for everyone. Factory output surged until we got hit with tariffs which effectively halted a large portion of our exports. The customer base shrunk even though the need was still there. No customers became idle plants and the rest is history. It was Europe's fault and their socialist tax policies that caused it. No different than what Obama is trying to do now.
