Drunken-Driving Among Hispanics Focus of WRAL Documentary

Raleigh — The high rate of drunken driving accidents involving legal and illegal Hispanic immigrants is the focus of a WRAL News documentary airing Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Focal Point: "Crossing the Line" also looks at the challenges law enforcement agencies and the court system face in trying to punish undocumented immigrants for driving drunk. It also looks at how Latino advocacy groups are working to reach out to Hispanic immigrants and educate them about the dangers of driving drunk.

According to a recent study from the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, Hispanics involved in car crashes are two-and-a-half times more likely to be drunk than white drivers and three times more likely to be drunk than black drivers.

Hispanics also account for 18 percent of drunken-driving arrests, while making up less than 7 percent of the state’s population. Drunken driving is also the number one killer of young Hispanic men in North Carolina.

"Crossing the Line" also profiles the case of Scott and Tina Gardner, a couple from Mount Holly, N.C., who was hit by an illegal immigrant on their vacation in July 2005. Tina Gardner was left severely brain-damaged, and Scott Gardner was killed.

The driver, Ramiro Gallegos, had a blood alcohol concentration of .22, nearly three times the legal limit.

“My son didn’t have to die," his mother, Emily Moose, said. "The man that drove the truck and took his life had been in front of a judge five times. He had been deported from this country twice.”

More recently, there have been several traffic accidents involving Hispanic immigrants.

On Oct. 25, Elbin Fabiel Ocampo Cruz, 22, was driving westbound on eastbound Interstate 540 between Creedmoor and Six Forks roads in Raleigh when he collided with a woman's car. An illegal immigrant, he faces charges including driving while impaired and reckless driving.

And in March, Luciano Tel***, 31, of Angier, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run and other charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run involving a tractor-trailer

Two people who were in the car with Tel*** told authorities that he had been drinking. He had been convicted in 2005 in Wake County on a prior DWI conviction and was wanted for violating terms of his probation.

So... This definitely means that Hispanic immigrants (legal or illegal) are no good.

Why is everything about race with you? You have got to have the lowest self esteem on the face of the earth. Actually Someone12 they don't care about anything but themselves which is why their respective cesspool homelands are lawless, corrupt, drug and gang ridden, and most of them are functional illiterates at best.

At the end of the day we would be much better off if in this order we:

(a) Temporarily suspend ALL IMMIGRATION to this country;

(b) Build the wall faster than a speeding bullet, or regularly fill the river with alligators to keep the new ones from coming in or the repeats from returning;

(c) Cut off ALL taxpayer subsidized benefits;

(d) Fine ALL employers who hire illegals which will automatically guarantee that the majority self deport.

(e) Deport all those that refuse to leave voluntarily;

(f) Make it mandatory that the minor anchors of the breedmares be deported along with them;

After we have accomplished the majority of these steps we can then begin to figure out who is here, why they are here and only then should the moratorium on any form of LEGAL immigration be lifted.

I disagree that I "set myself up" for personal attacks. Nobody on here has to like what I say or how I say it but it doesn't give anyone the right to call me "Nigga's" under any circumstance. To answer your question:

With the influx of an estimation from 2000 of 12 million and a recent estimation of 38 million (which is probably more accurate) with an estimated 500,000 crossing our southern border daily it would be foolish to propose a timeline for the ban.

These are the steps necessary that will determine the length of the moratorium on legal immigration:

1. Seal the border;

2. enforce the current laws on the books, which will force self deportation;

3. Arrest, detain and deport anyone that is stopped and cannot present proper identification that determines they are here LEGALLY. No more free passes for those who ignore the fact that being here illegally is A CRIME.

4. ASSESS THE NEEDS OF AMERICA, not the desires of the heart of the millions who come here simply looking to live the "American Dream." Legal Immigration used to be and should continue to be a means of allowing in those who fill a need in our economy and BENEFIT America, not destroy it. Legal Immigration was never intended to be a means for cheap labor to perpetuate corporate greed subsidized by the taxpayers. We do not need millions of wage supressing, uneducated beasts of burden here under the guise of "need". This country's population is well beyond the level of comfort and turning into the very 3rd world model illegal aliens are fleeing only to recreate all that is wrong with their countries. The majority of those who are here illegally fail to realize they are their own worst enemies and it is they who perpetuate the poverty and crime rates. Melting pots are fine as long as those who come here from other countries assimilate and accept and adhere to American rule of law, culture and language. Cultural conversion is not acceptable, and is non negotiable. Those who have come here illegally or otherwise demanding that we lower our standards of living and way of life to make them comfortable in order to accomodate their short comings or speak a language other than English in our own country need to stay home where they are free to live their archaic lifestyles. We do not want nor need them and have done fine without them and will continue to do so. We are a generous people who have invested billions of our hard earned tax dollars to help countries all around the globe, unfortunately to no avail.
