Processing time

I am a Canadian employed and residing in the US under a NAFTA work visa (TN). My wife and I are thinking of applying for permanent residency. I have a good understanding of the whole process (H1B, Labor certification, petition, adjustment of status). We are presently in western NY State. I am told that NYS has one of the worst backlogs. We are indecisive on whether to apply here and wait the time or find work in a different region were we wouldn't have to wait so much.

I have a considerable experience working in defense electronic systems. Unfortunately, the US NAVY decided to no longer award contracts to foreign companies (even if it was a canadian division of a US corporation). The result was they moved the products to a US division and laid off all the engineering teem (including me). Nowadays, all defense companies have a strict rule of hiring citizens and permanent resident. Even my ex-employer has my old job posted but I don't qualify. Anyone has advice for me. I would really like to get that green card ASAP. Maybe I would have a chance of getting back into my old position?

Processing times are slow everywhere, that is why it is important to start the process as soon after you obtain the H-1B as possible.

Given your history with defense systems, you may qualify for a national interest waiver. This would allow you to skip the Labor Certification process and save a few years of waiting. There are other options, but I would need to know more about your work experience.
