It is relevent. Not to immigration but to you as a citizen of your home country. Having a GC only makes you a legal resident here. You are still a citizen of your home country. Once you leave here your citizenship becomes more important and so does your passport. The GC will get you back in here but won't do you any good anywhere else. When you travel remember your citizenship and plan accordingly.

You voted democrat. This country is not worth sneaking into any more.

Yes, Canada included. If you are a USC you may not need a passport, not sure if that changed yet. For Mexico USC's need a passport for re-entry to the US. Anyone who is a GC holder the rules of their home country apply when it comes to passports and visa requirements.

A US passport is for a USC only. A GC holder needs to keep their original passport up to date. See the home country consular for instructions on how to do that.

You're right davdah, for my country is ok[my country accept 3 citizenships]but for another country my GC can makes me problems. In fact, only now I realize that a stamp on passport,is not always a good think. Thanks very much...Wise advice.I'll remember JUST my citizenship.

I went to Canada few weeks ago by land, I did not need my passport (I took it anyway). I gave them my GC, no questions asked. I re-entered, did not require my passport, he never asked, except am I considering Citizenship.

You are right though, your Citizenship is what counts over the GC when traveling. Even if you are a resident here, you still require the necessary visas (if applicable) to travel to certain countries depending what Citizen you are.

I came across this recently, with a mission trip my church is planning. Everyone has to have visas except me Smile They require all USC's to have one, but a BritC doesn't, and I am still a BritC.

NHF, she can't apply for a US passport until she naturalizes. Only USC's can have a US passport.

Going by land is different to air. I think they consider the GC as more than just an ID (like a drivers license which USC's used to use), maybe that is why they accept it for perm residents.

The final new rules for crossing over border will change in the future, can't remember when it comes into effect.

I always take my passport, even for domestic flights, just in case.
