Many of our long time posters are coming back, see this thread: http://discuss.ilw.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=691603441&f=902603441&m=98210608341 Perhaps some of the folks who are reading this thread want to say hi to the returning folks! Just a thought!

Thanks for the addition of Smileys! Smile

Regarding cross-posting: In IME (Illegal Mexican Exploitation) thread I've posted general articles. In the HU (Heads Up) thread I've tried to post only articles are that about changes in particular dealing with raids or changes in a state's law. I try not to duplicate an article from one to the other. The only time I would is when it's an article of importance and warrants the attention or I don't want it to be missed by those that might only read the Heads Up thread. I see no reason for me to post these elsewhere. Except for some recent interruptions we experienced on the board, this has primarily been my pattern with posting articles which I've been doing for a year and in the future I'll follow what I've been doing and also respect other threads. I've made it a point to keep these contained in these two threads.

OK, now for responses to folks who have posted on this thread recently:

To Mrs. B: Please feel free to take "ILW" to mean "Immigration Law on the Web", thats what we like to believe in our office too.

To Sprint_girl07 and Caribbeanman: Our rules are meant to regulate behavior, not to regulate content. Over time, if people are well behaved, the content will also be fine. However, in the past, lots of folks here used bad language. Most of these folks used such language in reaction to a very small number of original offenders. I am taking the position that we should let bygones be bygones and move forward by looking ahead, not by looking back. I am not saying your point does not have merit, but what I am saying is that we should NOT institute more rules than necessary. If we have too many rules, the whole community will suffer. Lets move ahead one step at a time. We have several of the old-timers returning to the board, and I have a good feeling about this development.

To all: I hear everyone who has commented on cross-posting and duplication. As I mentioned, this is something that is widely done in many discussion boards throughout the web. I look forward to more comments on this. I will also be researching the issue. - Sam.

OK, I have feedback for all on the tech issues (our tech guru has been ultra fast today!):

To Swissnut: The text reply feature apparently is hardwired into Groupee, but we can think about this again when we upgrade the technology platform for the board later this year.

To Carribbeanman and explora: We have checked on the PM issue, and we believe that it is an issue of your respective cookie settings and private zone settings. Please look into your settings, and that should clear up the matter.

For the anonymous PMer who wanted to set up "groups" on this board - there is no such feature in the Groupee version we are currently using on this board. However, you can send messages to multiple "buddies" from your buddy list, and these will be private, not public. Trust this helps you in communicating with those whom you choose to include in your conversations.

I have received a PM as follows:

If i remembered correctly this is the second time SOM has broken the rules since the new rules were implimented the first one being when he send a threat to you say quote "death to SAM" i cant remember which post it was on but i saw it.

I believe that the language of some of SonofMichael's posts is in poor taste, but unless it is a clear violation of the board's rules, I will not take action. We have to be firm, but we also have to be fair. On the other hand, I also find that some of SonofMichael's posts are humorous. Look - with a community as large as ours (we have close to 10,000 members, not counting a much larger number of guests), there will always be disputes about matters of opinion. As you will all have no doubt noticed, I am staying very far away from any opinion-related issues. Our rules are meant to police style, not content.

As I have said before, and will say again as often as is necessary - too many rules is bad for everyone. Lets stick with the few rules we have, and see what happens. So far, the new rules seem to have improved both the quality and the quantity of postings. I am not opposed to adding new rules gradually and with due consideration. There is currently a new rule open for comment on duplicate posts and cross postings. But lets move carefully and with deliberation - its in everyone's interest that this community not be hurt by too much structure (or even a little structure imposed too quickly). Trust this helps understand how we are proceeding.

Sam,

As we can't open up groups, is there a way then that you can change private messaging?
At present you can only chat to the ones you initially include in the conversations (buddies) when you first set it up.
Is there a way that you can technically change it so we can add people to the conversations after we set it up?
There are new people always joining, and if there is a private discussion going on in PM, we can't invite say a new member to the chat.

It would a lot easier if we could have that facility rather then having to keep re-starting a new PM just to add someone.

I understand what you are saying Sam, but if someone posted some very foul language and its left there, newcomers would read it and be very put off. (even current members).

The thing is, what stops anyone registering a new ID, post some vulgar words, you warn them, they come back, you warn them and so on until they are banned.
They can easily have more then one ID going on and just keep posting foul language, knowing their posts will not be deleted or edited out.

Leaving the foul words in is basically allowing the offender to get away with it and having the pleasure to have their offence still in full view for everyone to read.

To Sprint_girl07: I am not sure that anyone "can easily have more than one ID going on". We can check by IP too. As to being "very put off" - look, we are improving, lets not get impatient - Rome was not built in a day! This board has been around in some shape or form since 1999. The current technology goes back five and a half years on this board. The #1 complaint for the last 8 years has been foul language - so thats we are so insistent in ensuring that that gets stopped. Stoppage comes first - removal is something else. If you have a leaking boat, first you fix the leak, then you work on bailing the water. Improvement is going to be the work of months, not days.

What a joke ! I reported a post several times that made threats against me and included my personal (old) address and other personal information and still it has not been deleted. This is clearly a case where you have some rules for some people and a different standard for everyone else.

SonofMichael: Well, if you are ready to discuss this in public, great! Firstly, we have the same rules for everyone. I am going to consider the point you raise here and post my thoughts for your comment and everyone's comment. This is the first time that I am aware of that you have raised this issue. It is not an issue that we have yet made a policy on. Give us a few days, I will address your point. - Sam.

SOM you should cut Sam some slack. He sounds like he is a Republican. He likes a minimal amount of rules and interference .

Hello Sam

Yes Swiss Avatar is really cool and updated 2iagree

My feelings on the "double postings" is.. What's the big deal? Sometimes 2 or 3 members may post a popular news article etc. it may get placed in 2 threads... or one person may make a thread while it has been placed in 2 different places.

Sometimes the topic is applicable in 2 different places,. Lets say a article was placed in Stop the raids thread and also in Mexican Exploitation Thread. Now One poster may not read the "Stop the raids" thread, while they do read the Mexican exploitation thread. if the article was not placed in both threads, the poster may have missed an informative artice.

I am happy for the duplicate posting sometimes as I may not necessarily read all the threads.

This seems like much adu about nothing.
Just my opinion Smile

To Mike_2007, Jake01, ProudUSC, Sprint_girl07: I am not sure I understand your point about a chat room. I am under the impression we have one on this board right now. Just look at the top right corner of the board menu above, click on "go", then on "chat rooms", then on "live chat". I just tried it, and I ended up in the chat room. I was the only one there right now. But I believe if two or more people showed up at the same time, it would work. So, to summarize this issue - I believe we have a chat room, and encourage you folks to use it.

Hi Sam, Chat Room is not working. We gave it a try and it wasn't successful Confused. Anything you guys can do to take a look at it will be appreciated.

Nevermind, Sam. Chat is working fine - at least for two of us!

Actually the chat seems to have a bug in it. Notice the yellow caution in the lower left corner.

Line 32 char 23 error 0 access denied message.
This is a defect in the programming. Might be a vista issue. Using IE 7 cipher 256.
