William,
I know of a Brit who came over here recently a few months ago but don't know all the facts except it is very similar to yours.
He married a USC whilst visiting and also sligthly over stayed before he went back to UK.
His wife filed something not sure how far that went but anyway he tried to visit the US either at christmas or early this year and was refused entry. They had all his details on their system.
He had to go back and apply for a visa..not sure what one, probably the B2 visitors. He said it was not that difficult to do (US Embassy London)
He is here now but he was questioned somewhat again at port of entry but with that visa he got through.
Its up to you to take the chance, but my advice would be either go and get the visa anyway to make sure, or call or see someone at the US Embassy London (they charge a fortune calling them though).
I am not saying they wouldn't know but US immigration lawyer would not know as well as the US Embassy would imo.
Also at the end of the day, with all the security and all that these days, its the port of entry immigration you have to convince.
All the best
(from a fellow Brit)
