Dc..don't take this the wrong way but you do often bring up the Philippines in a lot of conversations. It is like you are giving a dig, it depends how you read it. When you suddenly bring in the country or their people out of no where, we wonder why and for what reason did you bring it up.
RN is right, I think you need to give it a break, I know you have connections so to speak because of your wife and her family, but you have to see it how others may see it.
I know how I would feel if you were married to a Brit and kept bringing England into the conversations. It would feel like you were digging at my country or me.
Please see it from an outsider looking in.
Im not having a go, but sometimes we need to put ourselves in other peoples shoes.

I agree the subject of the Phillipines needs to be given a rest. No need to place blame on an entire population of people for the situation that occurred in your life, DC. I have friends from the Phillipines too. They are very delightful people.
RN, Please Forget stereotype! I Am Searching For Truth, i Could Care less its Called Philippines! I Am Just seeking Answers, Wanting To Understand a culture Of Afar!
All Filipinos Here That Are defensive, Please, Nothing To be defensive about! I Want To Learn About A Place That Has Struck My Interest Becaue Different! Language, origin, Ethics, Doesnt Matter! I Just want To Learn!!!
DC...I have learnt growing up that no matter how many bad people you encounter from one country, it is no way a true vision on anyone's country just because of those few. You can meet 100 bad people, again that does not reflect all the rest of that nation or their people or culture even. Look at America, so many different people, so many different views, so many different ways.
When I went to school in France, I started to think all French people were horrible, racist, and a load of other things. I had a bad time, and being there during the time when the Falklands War was happening, I was getting so much grief from being British, it was like I was the one going to war with the Argentinians.
Guess what...out of that school I met wonderful French people, I traveled all over France and they were all so different to the Parisians and the kids in my school. I can't hate the French because of some naive French kids, and because of what happened to me. Now my brother married a French woman and have children, so thank God I don't still have that grudge.
If I took everyone who was ever nasty to me or what I have seen on the media as those people representing and reflecting their country and everyone else in it, jeez I would be hating the whole world!
I have never been to the Philippines but so far anyone who I have met who were from there, and I have met many in my life, have been totally awesome. Kind, considerate, hard working and very keen to educate themselves in high end careers. That is my experience, but I am sure there are some bad eggs so to speak out there just like here and in UK and every other country in the world. Judge people for who they are individually DC, not as a nation, culture or their citizens.
If you have this kind of negativity about the Philippines then seriously how is your son going to see it as he is growing up.
Our children learn from us, they take our prejudices from us, racism, as well as the good of course. But believe me you may not think he is listening or learning, but they sense your feelings and take in what you say.
What you have to believe in is that there is good and bad everywhere, and you don't necessarily have to learn more about a country, it is a fact, good and bad in all races.

Sorry to say that your dozen Filipino friends may not be representative of the real essence of what the Philippines or its people really is. There will always be good and bad in any country and people. The problem with you is your tendency to generalize and stereotype people both here in the US and out there in the Philippines.
The Philippines is an extraordinary country in many aspects. It's very rich in natural resources. You name it: fertile soil, mines, tropical forests, aquatic flora and fauna, beautiful beaches (around 7,100 islands), high literacy rate (but a big fraction of its workforce are around the globe), and it's poor as a country.
What makes a country successful? Its people and its foundations. The Philippines doesn't have a solid ground to stand on, so to speak, when it comes to both. More than three centuries of Spanish tutelage, then all-American from the turn of the 20th century up to this day, and a Constitution that has been totally written and rewritten three times. And with the continuous interchange of politicians beholden perpetually to Uncle Sam, what could be expected? A country in shambles that belongs to the world - so exciting and so rich, but opted to be poor.
