Lou Dobbs who calls himself a "Populist," Republicans, aligned extremists and miscellaneous foes of the now dead Senate immigration bill, last Thursday jubilantly claimed "victory."
I am wondering what victory?
The 12-20 million are still here...America is alive and strong and not dead yet -- per Rep. Tom Tancredo, and no one will deport them summarily, in busloads destined for some "American Gulag" -- in which the estimated 12 million immigrants will be sentenced to confinement.
This was a BILL -- which can be amended over and over.
An opportunity to strengthen and refine immigration laws has passed, because of fear mongering by the like's of Lou Dobbs -- who is quite accurately depicted in this article.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Lou Dobbs, and others, who vocally and effectively opposed amnesty for illegal aliens. The will of the American people prevailed, and the amnesty scam was defeated.
The debt of gratitude is owed to Lou Dobbs and everyone who opposed S1639, no question about it, but I would disagree that the measure was an equivalent of amnesty.
Please amend that to: "The will of the 30% of America — uncompromising, angry voices of hate, venom and racism."
One thing is for sure: The Republican Party has lost the Latino vote... maybe forever -- they are registering in record numbers, and as you have seen in previous elections, sometimes it takes only a few thousand votes to win an election -- Exactly the same way the Republican party lost the Black Vote -- "Uncompromising Politics of fear and division."
It may not be evident immediately, but will be costly in the long run.
The Senate Bill should have gone through -- then further refined in Congress, before it became law -- by which time many kinks would have been ironed out.

There were a lot of reasons why the bill was killed. I know many legal immigrants who did not want the bill to pass because it eliminated the family migration at the expense of allowing illegal aliens. Many people did not like the bill because it was another enforcement bill with allowing illegals to become legal. Two diametrically polar opposites. On the record, I do not agree with most of what Lou Dobbs has said about immigration, but you cannot simply put the blame soely on him either.

I would disagree. I know many latinos did not want the bill to pass in its present form. Reason, it eliminated family immigration, a unforgivable sin in Latino and Asian communities. And I did not like the bill. It was not immigration reform. It was an enforcement bill to only appease some illegal immigrants. It was not realistic and would have been further scolded in the US house.

One day a reform will take place. By then Lou Dobs we will be not 12 million anymore we will be 24 million. People is still coming. For every 10 that CIS gets 30 are getting in and there is no Bill. No Stop. All for just stupid idealism. Unjustified racism. We'll wait. God has a reason for everything and we will get our chance. One day. Not far away. We have American children they'll vote one day and we'll make sure they remember all of you. And of course Lou Dobss in not only tha one to blame but his heart is full of hate for hispanics. But I leave that to God He'll know what plans He has for him.and also for SunDevilUSA.
But for me, the merit or demerit of the bill is beside the point. What I'm looking at was the golden chance to address the huge, huge issue of immigration. Because from the looks of it, both its legal and illegal aspects are equally flawed.
Prime example is the immigrant visa ballyhoo of last week. Sometime last month, the DOS announced that almost all EB visa categories are going to be current(available) by this month. But suddenly, it said "NO" wait a minute, ow! actually on second look, we missed that the DHS/USCIS has already exhausted all visa numbers for this fiscal year ending 09/30/2007, no more visa requests will be entertained until October 1, 2007. The USCIS on the other hand affirmed that beginning July 2, all applications will be rejected in reference to the latest DOS announcement. Hah! slammed were the doors even to those who follow the law and play by the rules, Holy Grief!
Then come the illegals. Okay, the taboo word is amnesty - they broke the law, they shouldn't be rewarded, blah, blah, choobah, choobah, choo, choo... then what?????? They are already here and increasing in number. They were let in so we must deal with them, how? anyhow! Looking the other way will not drive them away. The bill was conceived to address this question. It was far from perfect, indeed, but the other alternative is to do nothing. No perfect cure is there for any serious disease, but death is more painful knowing that no remedy has been undertaken. Folks, we are heading to that dangerous road!

Hah, give me a break! Immigration is not a Democrat or Republican issue. It's an issue that everyone in America and beyond is a stakeholder.
Okay, the fact that some Democrats in the Senate killed the Bill is a given. Immigration, in its current shape and form, is a very divisive problem.
In the second and killer cloture vote for the Bill, 15 Dems voted "nays" that should have accounted for the 14 shortage from the 46 "ayes" to reach the required 60.
Well, these people do caucus with this and that party for convenience, and that's secondary, because they are politicians first and foremost. Very, very few of them strive to work for the good of the majority but for what can ensure their reelection.
The Republican president wanted the Bill to succeed for a certain legacy reason or something. But at the same time, his own party could only give in to something but not into so much. And the other party won't allow it to happen, of course, but rather push him and his party to their political free-fall.
It has been a sordid partisan interplay amid a tempestuous crisscrossing of personal political motives that tackled one of the most critical legislations of the ages. What a mess!
