Your lawyer filed what? Under family or employment based petition/application? Did such filing give you authority to work? Were you in a valid nonimmigrant status, authorized to work, at the time when your "paperwork" was filed? Did you commit a crime? See? your single question germinated into many more questions. Ow, in the US, avoid the excessive use of letter "t". They may not like that. English is afterall a very user-friendly language.
