I filed I130, I485, and I765.... back in October and yesterday I collected my EAD card in Detroit ( what an experience that was!) I went to get my social security number today and they said they could not do it yet as on there computer it says Im still a vistor and she needs to verify with Detroit if they can issue me a card? Anybody know or had this happend to them? I thought because i have a EAD card and filed all the paper work i would be able to get a SS number and be able to work!
RHYS i assume that you filled in the detroit local office? Did you submit also your physical test together with the I-485, I-765 and other documents? How long did the receipt paper that you will be coming for the interview?
i will be glad if you can answer my questions and we can share both of our experiences!

I filed in September and received a receipt in October. However I did not receive anything else until last week, that was an appointment letter to go and collect my EAD, in march. However i decided to go down yesterday, as it had already been something like four months so I went to the office and collected it. If you do not an appointment letter you have to wait outside before you can talk to someone. They will not answer any question unless you have a ticket. It can take up to two hours to get a ticket, then another two answer before you will be able to see someone!!! It was chaos, and the room was so small with no organisation, one of the worst experiences i have ever had!
That's nothing. Here in LA, i accompanied a gf to help her get a replacement nat certificate at the santa ana office. We had to get there at 3 AM! and the line was already around the block. Couldn't believe it.
Took us almost 5 HOURS to finally get a ticket. I was so pissed -- I even yelled at one of the INS officers. I was like "Let me ask you a q. Instead of charging $50/application and making people wait 6 hours. Why not charge $100/application and use that extra revenue to hire more personnel, so we DON'T have to wait 6 hours. What part of that formula doesn't make sense. Or do you guys pride in delivering the worst service of any federal agency around?".
They just gave a blank stare, shrugged and apologized. But they did get someone to help us right there and we got what we needed.
Just because they don't speak english, and are "dem foreigners" -- doesn't mean you can treat 'em like crap and let 'em sit out on a sidewalk for hours in the cold.

I received my EAD on mid November, 2003. I still dont have a SS number. They say INS has to send my security verification or something like that. INS says they have a huge backlog and that is why is taking soooooo much time.
This is happening in NY city. Hope you have better luck.
I am not working, I stay home all day (boring). Yu are not supposed to get a job until yout both EAD and SS number. I havent even tried (I guess a serious employer may want to see my ss card).
What do I do about having no SS number? Actually is very stressful. I have no job, no bank account, no driver license. I am trapped in my own house (there is no public transportation in my area noe any commercial activity). Lucky me, I have a great hubby to tell me not to worry. I have been in the INS office and in the SS office many times but they always tell me to wait. I may go again next week.
Sorry about not getting a social security card both RHYS and Cayita. I already have a SSN because i applied for it first time when i enter back in 2003. Nowdays it takes time because the SSN administration checks with the homeland security and it takes a while.
