I was wondering whether someone could advise me on one matter related to my return to the United States. I am an LPR who left to work for an American company overseas to make some money and to pay off my debts in the US since in the current slumping economy I was not able to do that in the US. I plan to travel to the US every six months to preserve continuity of residence for naturalization purposes since I plan to return to the US once my reentry permit expires and apply for US citizenship as early as I qualify for it. Could someone please tell me how many days there are in the six-month period within which I should come back for a visit to the US? Is it 180 days or is it literally six months, however many days end up being in those particular months during which I was absent from the states? I am currently planning to visit the US 171 days after my departure. I am assuming that this will count as a visit within a period below 6 months. Thank you very much!

I believe you are supposed to remain IN the US for a minimum of 6 months/183 days to be safe. To keep your status.
Not just a visit every six months.

guest 1 to guest 2: You can travel if you have valid reasons for it so long as the absence is temporary and you have a reentry permit. My absence is temporary, but i need to know how long I can be away not to disrupt the continuity of residence for naturalization.

A good rule of thumb is that 180 days is the equivalent to six months in INS time. If you will be returning to the US within 171 days, that will be fine. Be sure to keep proof of your travel, such as airline tickets, copies of the entry stamp you are issued when you return, and any other evidence that can show when you were physically in the US.
