I wanted to give my opinion on this board, so here goes...

I feel the board over the months since I have been here, has become a place for people to use it to attack any immigrant whether legal or illegal or even a place for certain people to use it to bad mouth anyone. Maybe they don't have anything else better to do, so they come here to abuse people, especially maybe the vulnable.

This place should be where people can come and get advice, read and learn more about immigration issues, tell their stories to help others etc
I for one came here for advice and help, and I did get attacked by a certain member, which I very nearly did go away, as I felt I was not welcomed here, in fact I did feel somewhat alienated by not being American.

If it wasn't for some of the regular posters telling me to ignore him as he does this regularly, and was given some great advice from some great members, I would have left and felt really hurt.

I know there have been numerous of new members asking for advice, and they too have been attacked especially by certain members. These certain members can be quite legal here, but like I was, all immigrants are treated like criminals, so this scares people away.
Has anyone noticed how many people are viewing these forums, but not actually joining in?
That is most likely because they are too scared to, after reading posts like the ones that attack anyone who isn't US born, or anti immigrants.
Certain posters even attack USC's and find anyway they can to bad mouth them, even if its racial, sexual, in fact any discriminating way they can find.
Sam...its up to you really how you want this website to be seen as, if you want more people to come here, then you have to make better rules, and moderate it a lot better.

Every successful website, or forum set their rules, and they can set it how they like, even as you say freedom of speech.
Most successful sites allow freedom of speech, but will not tolerate people who purposes uses that term to abuse others on the sites, or use the site for fun.

I do hope this site can improve, and stop the foul language and constant abuse towards everyone.
There are ways someone can give their opinions even if its not nice, but in a less abusive way don't you agree?

In case you haven't figured it out yet I'm not in favor of banning anyone except perhaps Manali. And only because this person has explicitly shown their desire for this country's demise. Aside that I'm in favor of fair game for all.

I do however would like to share something positive with you Sam, for having joined this forum, I would not have met some great wonderful people..(well in cyberspace that is) lol

Without mentioning names, there have been some people who not only have helped me in writing, but have also in other ways, and if it wasn't for their kindness and support and good advice, I would have been in a right mess emotionally amongst other things.

I have through this site, come across some wonderful people and they have been very helpful in many ways. I have also learned a lot.

We always like to complain, so for a change, a compliment and some positives Smile

But when things go bad and the factory closes who is there to help them? Even if they have been there for 8 or more years, does it matter? No it doesn't. We all take a risk that our employer, business, or whatever may not be there from day to day.

There is no guarantee. These people knew up front that the day would come when their status would change. They should have accounted for that instead of assuming they would be given something they were never promised.

Davdah,
We are not talking about moving from the country to the city because the farm cannot grow cotton anymore, nor are we talking about someone moving because GM closed its plant. We are talking about civil unrest where simply because of your political viewpoint, religion, or ethnicity will simply cause you to get killed. TPS is a non immigrant version of asylum or refugee status. If one claims TPS, which is simpler and much more easy. They cannot adjust status that easily, even if they were good boys and girls. Everything from the time they entered the country to the time of adjustment of status will be examined. If they were ineligible for adjustment of status prior to TPS being granted, then they are ineligible for adjustment of status if they marry a USC. TPS has the premise that once "the civil unrest" is over, then they could return home. But that is not reality. There is always "bad blood" or vengence from someone where the political or judicial process might not protect them even when the war is over.

As for the OP in question, some have claimed that the wife has "lied" because she had two expired passports from two different countries. Not enough of the case is known to make such a claim and not enough facts to determine why there were any foul play. His situation was complicated because of how she entered the country. That ties to her fate in order to adjust status. Her family were not going to "wait in line" when every second, every moment, in the place they called "home" could result in death of everyone no matter how old, how young, gender, age, etc. Those that "made the claim" did so as a personal attack to the OP and nothing more.

In keeping with the original intent of this thread, my two cents.

Break the site into a two sections. One for people seeking assistance and the other for everything else. Make the rules very simple. In the assistance section it is for just that minus any commentary. Any posts that fall outside that guise should be deleted.

It would serve the purpose of giving safe haven for those that are shy about posting and an area for people to share opinions or vent their frustrations. And yes, there are some decent people here. Actually most probably are. We only disagree on issues, thats about it.

Be careful what you wish for. It is not because you will get what you want, but that the wish will always come back to haunt you in ways you can never imagine. Civility is now due in this forum, not anarchy.

Sam, this isn't only about foul language. I see you want to avoid getting rid of some posters who seem to increase the site hit numbers, but how do you know you are not losing double or triple that amount of hits because thousands may be put off by the level this board represents (and it hit rock bottom a few days ago IMHO).
If you want our continued presence on this board, and real contributions, you need to set respectable terms of use for this board, and I think what Hudson posted is perfect, and we're deserving no less that that.

If it was not for your post from E-bay, I would not have given this a thought until maybe it was too late.

So your saying the 1st ammendment invites anarchy?

If everyone is going to cry the blues then get a 24/7 moderator and make it a pay site.

Sprintgirl,
I'm glad to see you back!
When I first came to this board, my screenname shows the condition I was in. I too was verbally bashed and judged as a criminal, which I am not, called names and if I were a weaker person, this would have scared me away indefinitely. Over the past 7 months, I have learned alot about immigration law and the complexities therein, and also met some wonderful cyberspace friends.
Through this time, I have been hoping that a moderator would somehow appear to oversee the nonsence and salvage this board, because it has the potential to be great.
Sam,
The rules are a good start. But the nonsence must end if you want this to be a healthy, growing community.
I agree with sprintgirl about the amount of views this board gets, without many having the courage to post or respond, based upon the onslaught of verbal assaults and namecalling. People are made fun of if they cannot spell perfectly or speak and write English 100%. Free speech is great, but when you're screaming fire in a crowded theatre, where does it end?
I agree that the foul-mouthed and disruptive posters should have been banned a LONG time ago.

Hello to all...wonderfull forum here with a lot of valuable information and insight. I have a question. My girlfriend is Costa Rican. She has been living here for the past 11 years...she is under TPS status (temporary protective status). She works here, owns her own home and is doing a-ok. Every couple of years, she files for renewal of her TPS. We have been living together for over a year now and she is an amazing girl. I definitely want to get married to her. If I marry her, can she become a U.S. resident ? Furthermore, can she one day (and how soon) apply for U.S. citizenship ?

Now for the details....when she came here, she flew in with a COSTA RICAN PASSPORT with a tourist Visa. Her dad is from Nicaragua and was able to get her a NICARAGUAN Passport too ! (her mom is the one from Costa Rica) So, once she arrived in the U.S. via her costa rican passport/tourist visa, she then applied for TPS status with her Nicaraguan passport since costa ricans are not eligible for TPS status...only nicaraguans. On the application to get TPS, she said that she came across the border from Mexico into Texas. [COLOR:BLUE] In U.S. eyes, she is a TPS from Nicaragua that entered through the border and was never inspected.

She still has her Nicaraguan passport, although it expired. She does NOT have her costa rican passport anymore. So my question to you is once we get married, is she eligible to become a resident and also a citizen ?

Thanks alot..

Nelson

Sam, something else I think that needs to change maybe, its about how one becomes a senior member for example.

New people to this forum will assume, like I did that the senior member is someone of authority on here or at least someone who has a high regard.

Well not mentioning names, just because someone posts a lot on here should not be classed a senior member, kind of gives a different impression on the name like.
Someone who likes to cause trouble and posts a lot should not be classed a a senior member.

I think members can be classed as frequent, new, or regular or something, and maybe the members who give out a lot of advice and good advice, maybe other members or the person who asked the question could rate the posters.?
Upon the ratings, maybe those people could become senior members or something?
There are some members here who really give out good sensible advice and don't even get involved with nonsense that is going around.

I hope I make some sense here.

A new member might think...what is going on here? A senior member of this forum is abusing me?
You see my point?

I think Davdah is right about breaking it up into two sections or how many is needed.

How about: One for advice etc

one for, chat, gossip and debate

and another with common questions with answers or links? like where do I find form xx or who do I write to, which site can I find.. etc..common questions that are often asked here, saving people having to scroll all the way back every time.

There is a site where if someone accidentally posts in wrong place, either a moderator or a member can click onto a sign, where then the moderator can move it to the right forum, this way, no duplicates and in right section.
