There is currently several items of legislation pending in Congress, specifically in committees. This legislation will eventually die if the public does not contact members of congress and request positive action on these bills. For example in the house HR 2585 is has been sent to committee. This legislation could help a significant number of folks deported or facing deportation for crimes including some aggravated felonies. It is a shame so many US citizens have been or will be separated from their parents, children, siblings, and spouses because the alien may have made one mistake. The US is supposed to have more compassion and be more progressive than other countries, but our immigration system is fundamentally flawed. I would encourage you to contact congress, the ACLU, AILA, and advocacy groups for various ethnic groups (Hispanics, Haitians, Asians, Jamaicans, etc.) and get people motivated to do something. Most people stuck with an immigration problem cannot afford to hire an expensive attorney or a lobby group to get them the desired result. But if more people would get involved and more importantly bug the members of congress then these laws may get passed and help entire classes of people who are in the same situation. With an election on the horizon and both major parties courting the minority vote, it is important to hold elected officials accountable and make government work for someone besides the special interests, Haliberton, and Enron.

With that in mind rest assured: things will happen at preordained times and not a day earlier or later. 70 centuries of known history are behind us: there are perhaps 70 more ahead. Be wise, learn from past. Best wishes, E.

Michael, why on earth do you waste your time on this website? I am sure if you take your act on the road you can have Rush L.'s job in a heartbeat. AND more importantly why do you live in NYC? It must make you sick to live around some many immigrants. The diversity must make you insane. Maybe you and Bloomberg should start a task force and report directly to W. Round every one up who can trace their heritage to some other country than the good old USA and send everyone back to their native land. Just make sure you, Bush, Cheney, etc are on the last boat or plane, because the only people who will be left here, after your task force rounds everyone up, will be Native Americans. Now God Bless you and have a great day.

E., I truly appreciate the point you are trying to make, but I have been researching this issue for a friend in trouble. I know several members of Congress have been putting legislation forth to try to correct the injustice in the immigration laws. I just believe if more people, particularly voters, would make their voices heard, then our elected officials will address this issue. During my research, I came across a story where a young man committed suicide after his father was deported over the sale of a dime bag of marijuana 20 years earlier. It is stories like this that have motivated me to try to get the word out and support the few members of congress who are trying to help. So I urge everyone who reads this thread (ignore Michael) to contact their representatives and other members of congress, the ACLU, AILA, etc and try to get a grassroots movement going to support HR 2585.

Here is an excerpt of Hr 2585 and the link for the full text: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c108:1:./temp/~c108u1TVgI:e1063: H.R.2585 Family Reunification Act of 2003 (Introduced in House) SEC. 2. CANCELLATION OF REMOVAL FOR LONG-TERM PERMANENT RESIDENT ALIENS. Section 240A(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1229b(a)) is amended to read as follows: `(a) CANCELLATION OF REMOVAL FOR CERTAIN PERMANENT RESIDENTS- `(1) PERMANENT RESIDENTS NOT CONVICTED OF ANY AGGRAVATED FELONY- The Secretary of Homeland Security may cancel removal in the case of an alien who is inadmissible to, or deportable from, the United States, if the alien-- `(A) has been an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence for not less than 5 years; `(B) resided in the United States continuously for 7 years after having been admitted in any status; and `(C) has not been convicted of any aggravated felony. `(2) PERMANENT RESIDENTS CONVICTED OF A NONVIOLENT AGGRAVATED FELONY- The Secretary of Homeland Security may cancel removal in the case of an alien who is inadmissible to, or deportable from, the United States, if the alien-- `(A) has been an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence for not less than 5 years; `(B) satisfies the residence requirements of paragraph (6); `(C) has never been convicted of-- `(i) an act of murder, rape, or sexual abuse of a minor; `(ii) any crime of violence (as defined in section 16 of title 18, United States Code); or `(iii) an attempt or conspiracy to commit an offense described in clause Pay close attention to the "forgivable crimes" noted in the penal codes above.."non violent felony" This is scary.. Typical scary government and justifiable stupidity. So much for U.S. making a safer and better place to live. This quote pretty much sums it up: "If you invited a guest to your home and that guest stole your jewelry, or used your child in p o r n ography, or gave drugs to your teenager, you would ask them to leave," said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, who voted against the amendment. "That is what we should continue to do with criminal aliens who have been convicted of serious crimes." Think very carefully and review the ramifications before you back HR2585

I , personally, would not support HR 2585. In current political climate of anti-immigrant sentiments last thing one would want to do is to "defend the right of criminal Aliens to commit a felony and stay in the US". I think introducing such Bills is a huge political mistake that will backfire and will rather have unproductive or even destructive consequences for ALL Immigrant community: it allows some people make close associations between CRIMINALS and ALIENS per se and thus fuels the overall desire to GET RID OF THEM ALL. Surprizingly, it seems like no one (including some high ranking politicians, lawmakers) in pro-Immigrant camp realizes that. My suggestion would be NOT to waste time or resourses on unfeasible, unrealistic projects, rather channel energies on more productive, achievable goals. And don't forget what I said earlier: Cycle and Trend are Gods of political decisions. Nothing will happen unless times are ripe. E.
