does anyone know if itin and ssn are unique? ie both are 9 digit numbers but is there anything that differentiates ssn and itin at first look. could two different people have the same series of numbers but one being an ssn and the other itin as long as they are identified as such.
They are two different numbers. The itin can only be used when you file your taxes while a SS# can be used to obtain loans, credit, Social Security. Q#2: NO
The ITIN looks like a SSN but it starts wirh a 9 and has a 7x in the middle. You will receive a CP 565 notice which will have a paper card with the number. The SSN will start with 0 through 7. The ITIN is valid for tax purposes only.
