Comment: Democrats Reject GOP's STEM Bill
Senate Democrats have put a damper on the GOP's attempt at immigration reform by opposing a bill proposed by Republicans geared towards foreign graduates of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The Democrats claim that this bill, which would provide visas to STEM graduates from American universities, eliminates the Diversity Visa Program, a lottery system that grants green cards to foreigners from underrepresented countries. While it is clear that Democrats are more than willing to grant visas for STEM graduates, they feel it is paramount to avoid eliminating any other visas from the pool. There seem to be more supporters of a guaranteed visa for these graduates than not; however, if the two parties are unable to reach a compromise, the future of the STEM bill as it stands seems grim.
