Comment: GOP En-Route To Embracing CIR - The LA Times reports here that, after their loss in the race to the White House, many members of the GOP are en-route to embracing a more lenient outlook on CIR. Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Linsey Graham (R-SC) have already embarked upon a bipartisan bill that might be able to be passed next year. Their plan entails providing green cards to foreign-born graduates of the advanced degrees of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics who receive diplomas from American higher education institutions, and creating a new and improved biometric Social Security card. Other members of the GOP hope to focus on a more specific issue: that of undocumented immigrants. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Susan Collins (R-ME) have proposed passing a version of or like the DREAM Act which would essentially allow young undocumented immigrants to acquire legal status in the country. While CIR requires cooperation and compromise of both major political parties, the fact that the Republican party is open to CIR creates hope.
