    Comment: Immigration Saves US Demographics
    The Washington Post points out that after the current recession ended, US birth rate has begun to climb-but the total fertility rate-i.e. number of children each woman has over lifetime is still only 1.858, far below the replacement rate of 2.1 children. This means that, without immigration, nation's population would be shrinking, and given the aging of the baby boomers, nation's workforce would be shrinking even faster, leading to unsustainable social burden and shrinking of the economy in the long run.

    Opponents are right that immigration is tied to declining standards of living - but in exactly the opposite way they think. If we do not sustain our population and attract the best and the brightest to compete in the world we are in for rocky economic times and some serious demographic problems. The good news is that with immigration we get a triple benefit. Not only do immigrants add to the economy and tax revenues, but statistically they are younger on average, plus they have more children than native-born Americans

    The beneficial impact of immigration on US can already be seen by simply comparing median age of US with Germany and Japan. The median age of Germans and Japanese is 46.1 is fully 8.5 years older than Americans. This is primarily due to immigration which brings in younger workforce to US that has more children on an average.
