    Comment: Republicans Deport Republican Party
    The Huffington Post reports that Republican Presidential candidate, Scott Walker, in an attempt to one-up his competitors, has sided with Senator Sessions in attacking immigration as such, not undocumented immigration.

    Walker's strategy is somewhat reminiscent of then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who, faced with similar questions over his devotion to the conservative cause in 2011, memorably tacked far right of his GOP rivals by endorsing "self-deportation." Yet not even Romney, who lost the Latino vote to Obama by more than 40 percentage points in November 2012, supported curbing legal immigration, a concept at the core of what it means to be American. Walker's pivot to the general election, if he makes it that far, could prove difficult, given that he will need to seek the votes of many Americans who immigrated here themselves -- or whose parents or grandparents did so.

    Attacking immigration is suicidal for the Republican Party. Attacking undocumented immigrants asking them to self-deport themselves is sufficient to destroy anyone's White House chances, as Mitt Romney amply demonstrated. To attack immigration itself is to pander to the basest of human instincts of undisguised blatant racism which has no place in a civilized political discourse. The Republican party must either deport Scott Walker from the party, or be prepared to self-deport itself from the White House forever. It would be a shame if the party born of the courage to fight the institution of slavery in the Nineteenth Century--the party of Abraham Lincoln--were to die of cowardice to face racism in its midst in the Twenty-first Century.
