    Comment: Abolish Visa Waiver Program
    The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) right from its conception and inception is a racist program clothed as an immigration convenience program. That is why we are not surprised to see that with Europe acquiring numerous immigrants from outside of Europe, the VWP is now being questioned.

    We welcome abolishing of the VWP. Let American consulates in Berlin, Paris and London handle tourists and businessmen and treat them just as badly as they treat tourists and businessmen in consulates in Mumbai and Guangzhou. Let European visitors be routinely, systematically and grossly oppressed as has been standard U.S. practice at our consulates in Bangkok and Manila. A facade of American "security concerns" covers up closet racism in every area of immigration. VWP is a clear test case. We invite anti-immigrationists to let loose the harassers at the State Department on Europeans. The powerful blow back that will result and the lessons learnt from it, must be applied to consular processing across the world to make consular processing in Shanghai, Bangalore and Jakarta less demeaning and more humane and welcoming.

    America has European roots, but we are living in an Asian century. Our immigration system belongs to the last century--not this one. Europe is slowly dying, whereas the Asia’s rise has just begun. We must cast our lot with Asia, and cutback our ties with Europe. This should be a gradual process but an inexorable one--analogous to the underlying change.

    Exhibit A is the Visa Waiver Program. Elimination of VWP or alternatively expanding it dramatically to include our Asian trading partners is the right course for America. We should be suspect of any program that looks unfavorably on the one third of humanity that is China and India--which is marching resolutely back to its historically central place on the world's stage.

    American immigration policy has always institutionalized racism from its very beginning and is shown in the massive disparities of staffing per visa applicants in consulates across the world. We encourage elimination of 90% staff in consulates of Europe and a tenfold increase in the staff across Asia, to bring staffing per visa application to parity throughout the world. The overall budget can be kept the same while reallocating money from Europe to Asia.

    The reason the State Department resists this commonsensical idea is that it would eliminate senior staff with cushy jobs enjoying an easy posting in Europe, and be replaced by junior staff in a scrappier harder working Asian surroundings. But the purpose of immigration policy is to further the interests of the United States, not those of State Department bureaucrats. It is high time US immigration policy and practice catch up with the Twenty-first century.
