  • Sep 26 - Taking Hispanics Support for Granted

Comment: Taking Hispanics Support for Granted
A recent Gallup Poll finds that Hispanics' approval of President Obama has plunged since the 2012 election from 74% to 52%. While it still remains above the President's national approval average by 10% points, this fall should give a pause to Democratic strategists.

[The] surge in Hispanic approval in and around the 2012 election likely reflects the Obama reelection campaign's attention to Hispanics and its focus on increasing Hispanic turnout in key battleground states. During his campaign, for example, Obama said he was confident that he would get immigration reform done over the next year. Immigration reform has not yet come to pass, suggesting that the disproportionate drop in Obama approval among Hispanics since the election reflects at least in part the failure of the president -- and Congress -- to enact these promised legislative changes.

Since the Hispanic vote was a decisive factor in the 2012 election, we would not be surprised if the Obama team attempts to woo this electorate again with yet another set of immigration-related promises. How many times can the same electorate be swayed by the same promises over and over again without any action to deliver them? Share your thoughts by writing to editor@ilw.com.
