  • Nov 7 - Labor Pushes Republicans on CIR

Comment: Labor Pushes Republicans on CIR
Politico and The Hill report that organized labor will be launching campaigns to make House Republicans pay for dragging their feet on CIR. They plan to point out Speaker Boehner's inaction of CIR, and to broadcast the views of the anti-immigrant Republicans to the Spanish speaking audience so that the Republican Party pays the price for appeasing these elements within the party.

"The AFL-CIO is poised to launch a high-dollar television campaign assailing House Republicans for their inaction on immigration reform, in an attempt to ensure that the congressional GOP pays a price if it continues to stall on an overhaul of the nation's immigration system, strategists for the labor giant told POLITICO. The powerful progressive group will spend a seven-figure sum on a wave of ads on Spanish-language television, broadcasting some of the most incendiary remarks conservative lawmakers have made about immigrants."
The Republican Party needs to do some serious soul searching on the issue of immigration. For too long it has let its anti-immigrationist wing shape its actions (and/or inactions) on immigration reform. To remain a viable national party, it desperately needs a substantial support from new immigrants, who will inexorably become a larger and larger political force year by year. We urge the party to take the long view, and not to jeopardize its future and that of America by kowtowing to the narrow-mindedness among their midst.
