    Comment: Law Firms React To CIR
    The bar (not just the immigration bar) is apparently not in much doubt that CIR will become a statute. However, the reaction of the large law firms is a little different than the conventional wisdom apparently legalization is not where they see the opportunity, which is instead elsewhere. Immigration Daily has learned that several, make that many, NLJ 250 law firms (the largest law firms in the USA, as compiled by the National Law Journal annually, based on the number of attorneys at the firm), are on the prowl for good-sized employment-based practices across the USA. The NLJ250 firms apparently prefer these employment-based practices to family-based practices since the primary opportunity they see in CIR is EVerify. Since vast quantities of employers will have to rush into EVerify as a result of CIR becoming a statute, and since these NLJ250 firms already have these employers as clients, the firms seek to add meaningful capability (not just a lawyer or two) in-house to service their clients post-CIR EVerify needs. The smart money is not on legalization as a source of business, it is instead on EVerify as a major source of business for the bar. The immigration bar has matured ILW.COM's proprietary internal database lists 170+ immigration practices with 5 or more attorneys nationwide, so there are as many targets as acquirers, creating a balanced market.

    The immigration law market will be thrown into complete upheaval should CIR become a statute (and the smart money says it will). It is not an exaggeration to say that CIR will be the opportunity of a lifetime for most readers of Immigration Daily. Even small practices will need to significantly re-tool. Some lines of practice will significantly decline at the same time as others explode, and totally new markets open up. Those who can move with the market stand poised to make a killing, those too slow to move will pay the penalty. Success can itself be a problem, since most firms do not have the ability to scale commensurate with the market opportunity that CIR unleashes. Market share will move wildly - established law firms and market leaders have the most to lose, and many of these will not make the transition smoothly, they will bleed market share to more nimble competitors. Some of the new sources of business for law firms will be counter-intuitive, including some that are ephemeral - which will be here and gone in a year or two. It is safe to say that a new era in immigration law practice (as a business) will dawn with CIR. Just as IMMACT '90 created the Fragomen firm of today (and its 4 major competitors), so will CIR create a whole slew of new law firms at the top of the immigration heap in the months and years to come.

    Help Wanted: Immigration Paralegal
    Washington, D.C. - Steptoe and Johnson, LLP. is seeking an immigration paralegal to provide support to the Immigration Practice Group in preparation and filing of petitions and applications with federal government agencies. Duties include assisting in tasks such as: preparing routine correspondence, researching immigration law, and procedures and case management. Paralegal will play a significant role in gathering information from clients and assisting with immigration strategies; collecting information and documentation from clients, preparing draft filings to relevant federal and state agencies, conducting research of immigration law and procedures, and preparing draft correspondences and memoranda also part of duties. Ideal candidate will have 2+ years of immigration paralegal experience preparing non-immigrant (e.g. H-1B, L-1, E-2, O-1) and immigrant (PERM and EB-1) filings. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills needed.
