As 2012 comes to a close, it is important to look back at certain successes and failures in the field of immigration in the past year. Recently, a prominent immigrant rights activist posted two consecutive blogs online, "Top 5 Wins for Immigrants in 2012," and "Top 5 Fails for Immigrants in 2012". Similarly, we would like to present an overview of the year in immigration. While it is unfortunate that 2012 saw a record number of deportations and the "Papers, please" provision of Arizona's SB1070 was upheld, not all was grim and dreary as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was implemented and over 100,000 undocumented individuals were approved already. There was also a slew of pro-migrant state legislation that was passed. When residents of Florida sued the state for excluding citizens of the United States who are children of undocumented immigrants from receiving in-state tuition, they were victorious. During the presidential election, voters in Maryland were asked whether undocumented students should be able to pay in-state tuition, and the proposal for the Maryland Dream Act was passed, making it the first state to offer in-state tuition for such individuals by popular vote. While these are certainly clear victories for undocumented individuals, the STEM Bill has not been passed yet in Congress just as the ACHIEVE Act has not been passed. As a whole, immigration has changed a great deal, some negative turns were taken and some positive. What is in store for the new year, especially as discussed during the end of this one, we can only wait and watch.
