Months ago talk of a discharge petition circulated among pro-immigration folks. Basically, House Democrats and allied Republicans could force Speaker Boehner to bring the Senate immigration bill to the floor for a vote if a written petition signed by a majority of House members was presented to him (that's all your Democrats plus 17 Republicans). Many believe that the numbers are there, but Democratic leaders have waited to see if the GOP could get it's act together before pushing on this. Whether it's just a threat or the Democrats are serious, Senate Immigration Committee Chairman Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters that the House Democrats need to start thinking about a discharge petition. A few dozen Republicans have come out in favor of an approach like the Senate's so there's some optimism that the votes might be there. Stay tuned...
