Comment: GOP Wary of Immigration Battle
For too long Republicans have regarded immigrants as punching bags. They have included anti-immigrationist measures in legislations however unconnected to immigration. Reality is beginning to dawn on Republicans. They are realizing their anti-immigrant sport is not cost-free, and they are unable to practice it with impunity.

There are two reasons for this realization:

  1. Republicans have begun to grasp that they cannot win Presidential elections with their anti-immigrationist rhetoric.
  2. Democrats have presented a united front defending immigration which has provided a foil which makes the anti-immigrationist agenda of the Republicans to stand out, and more difficult to sweep under a rug whenever convenient.
